Local AI privacy: where does your data go?

PreMask AI detects and masks personal information (PII) on your computer. Documents, name-to-placeholder mappings and history are not sent to our account service. Accounts and payments use separate online services.

What stays on your computer

The detection model and optical character recognition are included in the app. Importing, detecting, masking and restoring placeholders run locally. Session history is encrypted on each computer; it does not sync between your Mac and PC.

You do not need an API key, an Apple Intelligence subscription or a dedicated GPU for this detection. PreMask AI prepares the text; it does not replace the chatbot that writes your answer.

What needs an internet connection

Sign-in and activation: email address, authentication and license status. Documents are not included in these requests.
Purchases and billing: Stripe processes the information needed for payment.
Updates: the app checks its release feed and downloads new versions.
Your chatbot: you send the text you choose to share to your selected provider. That provider’s terms then apply.

Can I work offline?

The document engine runs locally after activation. The free trial ends after 72 hours. A verified monthly license covers the paid period with three days of offline allowance; a lifetime license has no artificial expiry date. A connection is still needed to refresh the account, renew a subscription and retrieve updates.

After expiry or sign-out, you can still access history and restore existing replies. New analysis requires an active license.

Does masking make a document anonymous?

No. PreMask AI keeps a local mapping so information can be restored: this is reversible masking. Context may still identify someone, and the engine may miss an item. Review text before sharing it, then review the restored reply.

Choose the right edition

Mac: Apple Silicon M1+ and macOS 13.3+. Windows: Windows 10/11 x64 or ARM64, with 8 GB RAM recommended. The same personal license works on your compatible computers. The Windows installer does not yet have a publisher certificate; SmartScreen or a managed PC may block installation.
